Crackdown on rowdy drinkers

The Evening News revealed earlier this month how at least one complaint a day about noisy smokers is being made to the local authority on the issue. Councillor Sheila Gilmore, the city's antisocial behaviour leader, said: "The bylaw is not just for the city centre, it's intended to be used across the city. "In some other parts of the country it is against the law completely to drink outdoors unless in pavement cafes, but we didn't want to be seen as killjoys. "The police have told us that their officers will use their own judgment in every individual case and that a commonsense approach will be taken." A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Police told the Evening News: "We will be duty-bound to enforce the laws as set down by the Scottish Executive, working alongside the council, but we would not like to make any further comment at this stage.

Bernanke Points the Way to Lower Rates

BEN BERNANKE LET IT BE KNOWN he's aware of the worsening credit crunch, which makes it reasonable to expect that he and his merry band of monetary-policy honchos will do something about on Dec. 11.

Awareness of the problem is no trivial matter. Last summer, when credit became a crisis, the charge leveled against the Federal Reserve chairman was that he was an academic too removed from the real world to know what was happening on the ground.

No criticism could be more devastating to a policy maker. I recall when our much-missed former Barron's colleague, John Liscio, dubbed John LaWare, a Fed governor in the early 1990s, "John Unaware" for his denial of the commercial real-estate crisis engulfing the thrifts and banks at the time.

But in a speech Thursday evening, Fed Chairman Bernanke explicitly took note of the deterioration in financial conditions since the Federal Open Market Committee's last meeting that ended on Oct.

Can You Dig It? Five Things To Know About The Shaq Deal

Said Kerr: "[O'Neal's] presence is magnetic and that is a big part of it."

2. Mike D'Antoni was the first Suns voter to push for the deal and Kerr was actually the last one to sign off.

This will be recorded as Kerr's first major move since assuming control of the Suns' front office and maybe the biggest trade he'll ever make. He knows he's "on the line" with how it turns out.

"If it works, I'm a genius," Kerr said. "If it doesn't, I'm a moron, I guess."

Maybe that's why Kerr was the hardest to convince.

It was easy to assume that this deal was somewhat forced on D'Antoni; welcoming Shaq could be saying goodbye to a fair bit of the speed and abandon that has defined the Suns since D'Antoni and Nash hooked up for the 2004-05 season.

The Truth About Honeybees Provide Clues to Their Disappearance

The scientific data does not currently show that GM crops are a danger to bees. So far what we do know is that GM crops overtly harm certain species of butterflies (also our pollinator friends). But this research does not test the long-term effect of bees fed GM corn syrup. We may be seeing the facts gathering irrefutably right in front of us.

None of us really knows what subtle link there may be between GM crops and CCD. But then, we also dont know how much of the GM research in general has been financed by the multinational corporations developing and benefiting from GM products. The moneyed lobbies of Monsanto, Dow and DuPont have insured that U.S. regulatory agencies do not impose labeling standards on GM foods nor protect the environment from GM plants cross-pollinating with other species.

Good Neighbor’s cupboard is bare in Anderson

ANDERSON — Tuna fish, grits, canned pumpkin and cranberry sauce — that's about all that's left in the warehouse for the Good Neighbor Cupboard in Anderson.

Now that the season of giving is over, the food pantry is looking at bare shelves and slim pickings for its 500-plus customers a month.

What the cupboard needs is food.

On Wednesday, a typical day for the cupboard, Mr. Berry said volunteers gave away 18 boxes of food. Over the course of 2007, the cupboard served more than 5,700 people, up from 4,737 in 2006.

With more people to feed, the organization is feeling the crunch.

“I think we've been kind of overshadowed by Anderson Interfaith Ministries and other high- profile food banks," he said. “We started in 1982, and for 20 years, we were the only food bank around."

Open between 10:30 a.m.
